BIOGRAPHY OF NANCY L. QUARLES



 

 Nancy has served as an elected official.  She was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1996 and she was term limited in 2002.  She served as the Chief Whip for the Democratic Caucus, Democratic Vice Chair of the House Tax Policy and the Redistricting and Election Committees, and was a member of the Public Utilities Committee.

 

Prior to being elected to the House Representatives, Nancy Quarles served as an Oakland County Commissioner and was a member of the General Government and the Planning and Building Committees.  She hosted a cable access public affairs television show titled “The Oakland County Commissioner Report”, and “Stateside” which airs on cable.

 

She is President Emeritus of the Southern Oakland County NAACP. Under Nancy’s leadership, the branch created programs to address the needs of the communities it serves. Some of those programs included:  Saturday School for Children at-risk, Investment Strategy for Young Professionals, Business Development Strategies Round-tables, and Business Awareness Forums. 

Nancy is an active member of many community-based organizations such as Women Impacting Public Policy, National Association of Parliamentarians, and National Foundation for Women Legislators.  She was the founding chair of the Michigan House Women’s Leadership Caucus and their signature program was to recognize Business Owners throughout the state during Entrepreneur Month. Nancy is a long-standing member of the Michigan Democratic Party where she currently serves as an adviser to the Women's Caucus; and the State Central Committee.  Nancy's involvement with the Michigan Democratic Party reaches down to the local level as well, which includes her membership in both the Oakland County Democratic Party and the Southfield-Lathrup Village Democratic Club.

 

Her commitment to the community includes serving on several boards, Oakland County Community College Foundation and Elizabeth Copeland Glass Education Foundation.  Nancy is invited frequently to speak and serve on panels of organizations and associations to explain the legislative and political process. She has been the keynote speaker at several commencements.

 

 Nancy Quarles has received numerous awards and commendations including the Omega Psi Phi Public Citizen of the Year Award, Distinguish legislator of the Year from the Michigan Independent Colleges and Universities Association, Oakland County’s Business Advocate Award, and Association of American Business Women’s Business Associate of the Year.

Nancy Quarles is the owner of Advantage Consulting Group, Inc. (ACGI), a management-consulting firm headquartered in Oakland County.  ACGI assist small and medium corporations with business development, research, and public policy development.

Nancy received a Ph.D. in public affairs and public administration from Western Michigan University and is a Thurgood Marshall fellow.  Nancy Quarles has served as an Adjunct Professor at both Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University. She is an alumnae of Leadership Oakland, Leadership Michigan and Leadership America.
